Problem with Idle at Startup

I have a 72 F100 w/360, C6 and 2bbl carb. I rebuilt the carb about a year ago. The problem I'm having is that when I first start the truck, it will not remain idling until I shift it into gear. Once shifted into gear it will remain idling. The other morning I started it, shifted it into drive, held the brake and gave it a little gas and it stayed idling. I never even moved. I can't for the life of me figure out what the deal is here. Before shifting it, it will idle at the correct speed for a few secods and then it dies as though it isn't getting any fuel. I can start it over and over and rev the engine all I want and it will still die. Once shifted it idles. Any ideas? The only thing I can think of that is related to shifting and carb vacuum is the shift modulator on the trans. But I can't see how that would have an effect. The trans shifts fine.
