93 Aerostar 2wd 3.0L automatic 170,000 miles. My son is currently driving my old Aerostar and limped it home yesterday with transmission problems. It won't move in reverse. When you put it in reverse it acts like it goes into gear but then it's almost like you have the brakes on and it won't move. Also when you put it into neutral it goes into gear (it will move forward but only in 1st gear, it won't upshift).
My son said he just went to put it in reverse and it wouldn't move , but since he is 16 years old I feel that I am probably not getting the whole story and probably never will. Any Ideals on what may have happened and what he has torn up?
Well, time to check the usual suspects. First, check the transmission color and level. If it is burnt looking, you have problems, and need to get it flushed and refilled. If the fluid level is low, it could do as you are describeing. It is not uncommon for a leaky transmission modulator to act this way, in addition, the fluid could be low from being sucked into the modulator. If you pull the vacuum line of at the modulator, and there is transmission fluid inside, you know the modulator needs replacement.
Check tranny cabel ajustment and fluid level before. It seems to be, that your son damaget it driving off-road. I had a similar problem. To damage tranny inside is difficult.
I will check fluid levels and modulator valve over lunch I'm at work right now & the van is home. Also I will look & see if it looks like he snagged something under the vehicle & take a look at the transmission cableing.
That has the Column shifter doesn't it? There has be a few here that has had problems with the screws in the shifter coming loose and causing problems. Sounds to me like it is out of adjustment. Sounds like it's being shifted into neutral instead of reverse. It might be one off. Theat would cause it to creep foreward when you shift it into Neutral.
If I recall from my own Aerostar, there was a thumbscrew adjustment. Just remove the plastic panels on the steering column, and it should be there. Shift into Park, and make sure that it is lined up correctly. Put it into each gear, and make sure that it is actually in that gear, then adjust the the indicator to match.
Im still having trouble with this problem. Here is whereI'm at now.
I have removed about half of the dash & instrument panel & still haven't got to where I can see all of the shifter on the column. Does anyone have a drawing or diagram of how it's supposed to look???? Or a detailed description on how to R&R the darn thing. Either would be a great help.
I tried to remove the shift cable from the transmission but can't figure out how to loosen the cable. My Chilton manuel just says loosen & remove. Not much help. What's the trick with the white retaining clip? Doesn't want to come out & I don't want to break it. Once again any help would be greatly apprecaited.
