hi am new hear, so i bought this aerostar with a bad transmission. this is what i have. a 92 ford aerostar extended 4.0L auto with AWD. it has 135K miles. this is what i know. the trans was gone over, but i do not no to what extent. that was around 60K. trans is clean, fluid is clean and level is fine. modulater is working fine. Thing goes in reverse great, with no problems. Its been about 5 years since i worked on these. so all the help i could get would be much appreciated. Next thing if i have to tear this out. will the guts from my rebuilt 89 3.0 be the same. i am going to research this, farther. i never used the thing, when i was at ford.
Sounds like someone didn't put the trans together right. The first thing that comes to mind is a forward clutch pack problem. If you do tear into it, test the clutch pack with air and listen for air escaping. It's been a while since I rebuilt one, but I do remember that the seals are cut very easily during installation.
thanks man, i know i'm gonna check pressures, and the band adjustments. I will probably tear out the valve body to see if anything is wrong. How do you check it with air?
Get a good book. When you remove the pump, you'll see holes in the case where the pump seats against it. If you blow air in certain ports, you'll be able to hear the clutch packs engage. A thud should be heard. If that doesn't work, or if you hear air escaping, then remove the clutch packs (drums). Before removing the piston from the pack, use an air nozzle to blow air into the hole on the back side. The you will be able to see the piston move. Once again, no air should escape. If it does, then you have a blown seal.
On another note, if the bushings were installed incorrectly, you can have the same problem.
I just took off the tranny pan. fluid in pan looked good no clutch burning smell, some metallic flake, but i definetly seen worse the filter looked ok. everything looks in tack. the one solidnoid is loose, not the body itself the plastic were the connecters and wires are.
