I'm going to be relocating soon roughly 500 mi one way, and I want to buy a trailer rather than rent one.
My truck has a max Trailer of 9200 lbs. The truck is all ready to tow with a prodigy brake controller and tow package.
In a ideal world I would like to have a bumper pull trailer that could be either open or enclosed (removable walls), big enough to haul older mustangs and antique tractors, and versatile enough for fork lift loading of large amounts of dry wall. And yet versatile enough to get a few nice bikes in.
I don't have any mustangs yet or things I want to haul other than my furniture, but if I'm going to buy a trailer, I want to buy one that could do it all.
I have not come across an open deck trailer that could be enclosed, and I don't have the time to custom fabricate walls and roof for a open deck trailer, not to mention that if I made the walls and such they would be really heavy.
Would a double axel 7x14 enclosed be enough trailer to fit an older mustang in or older tractors like Wd-45's? I really don't want a ramp door as I don't think that it could handle the weight of a car, and would be a hinderance when loading dry wall and other materials.
At least the 8x16, I dont think a mustang would fit in a 14' box, unless it was a 74-78 mustang II. I have a 67 stang, and I believe it is right around 14' long. that was the measurement used on the car cover box I got for it anyhow.
If I were to build a trailer like that, the sides would be on hinges and fold down to the trailer deck, over the top of each other. The back would drop into the stake holes and move to the front when not in use. The front would be removeable also. I would use bows on the top when the sides were up and have a good tarp made to fit the top. Ramps would be tucked under the trailer at the rear and just slide out after pulling a keeper pin. It would be double axle with brakes of course.
I just paid about $2200 for a new 2006 10k 18' flatbed, tandem axle with brakes on both, and surge brakes. I think it is 72" between the fenders, I know a fullsize truck fits on it anyhow. It has the stake pockets on the sides, and the ramps tuck straight in the back. I could easily put walls and a roof on it. I most likely will this summer so I can sell my pickup bed trailer. Just make some kind of frame out of wood or metal, then wrap it in aluminum or plywood. The trailer weighs about #2500 empty, I could probably keep the total weight around 3k with the right materials.
If you find a trailer with stake pockets (and rub rail), you could use the same aluminum stakes that flat bed semi's use - half sides, covered wagons... what ever you want to call them - with plywood panels between the stakes. A tarp over the top and off you go.
I think that I'll just end up getting a enclosed trailer of the 7x14 nature, and just try to find a cheaper used auto hauler when I get all of my stuff moved and a garage finished.
