Tailgate latch

So my tailgate window continues to work on and off and after doing numerous tests I have determined, that the reason the window will not go down is because the latch is not fully engaging on the striker bolt. It will fully engage for a while but then come loose again. Does anyone know how to fix this issue? Or where to find a new one? Thanks in advance

I would replace the plastic collars on the striker bolts if they're worn, worked for me

That's a great cheap thing to try $4-$8 at your local auto parts store for a package for 4 (2 long and 2 short). Long ones for doors, short ones for tailgate.

Oh and you'll need a #47 torx bit (at least that's the size on the door, looks to be the same for the tailgate. Hold on I'll go out and check ... brrr it's chilly out there Yup #47 for the tailgate as well).

Well see I did replace them a while ago and it worked for about two weeks, then I guess I hit a bump or something because it no longer worked leading me to believe the safety sensor is engaged which does not allow the window to lower.

Oh, have you tried to find a replacement latch? Not sure if you'd find any at any parts store, but it wouldn't hurt to look.

well I've looked online, I suppose I could go to o reillys's. I have already replaced the motor because that was what we thought it was first. Maybe I should disconnect the battery terminal to reset the computer and see if that helps any?

Can you lock the latch manually with the tailgate down? If so does the window work properly then?

Yes I would use a battery charger to lower it through just the motor then would close the latches and if I closed them all the way, the window worked great. Sometimes, though, the latches would only close about half way, like their when you were closing it there was one click and then the second click you heard was the one you wanted to be one. So on the first click, the window would not close but on the second click, the window would be fully functional.

Hmmm so it sounds like the latch is worn. There is that safety switch on the drivers side, inside the tailgate, all the way against the drivers edge. Looks to be a p.i.t.a. to get to though.

Mind you I'm only going off of my cross-wired brain and little experience actually fixing an issue like this. I'll have time on Friday to poke around a bit more if you don't get any other ideas/answers before then.

Yeah that's what I thought it was too. Do you know of any way I could bypass that safety switch?

I forget what terms I used .. I think it was "bypass rear window switch" while searching this forum. There's tons of threads but only a couple with instructions. I know there is a YouTube video about some guy talking about doing it, but not showing you how. There may be one that gives directions, but I'm off to class now and can't look for ya
