wasn't too hard for me the first time i did it. didn't mess with anything other than the 2 large nuts that secure the engine mounts to the frame, and the oil pan

i did it in 2 hours the first time, 2nd time was also 2 hours start to finish, but this time i replaced the bearings. i'm 17 no lift in the garage, and did it all by myself. makes me feel proud

You will have to remove the EGR valve to get the engine to go up any more. When you do the pan will clear but will still have to be squeezed out, it doesn't just fall out, it will have to be manipulated out. You will not have to remove the upper intake. While you are in there replace the oil pump. I used a cast iron one.

Heh, yeah, I already bought a new one. In fact, I've already taken the old one out. I was able to get it out from between the bottom of the engine and the pan. Generally speaking, is the EGR easy to remove?

There are only two bolts on the EGR valve but that is the easy part. There is a large nut that holds the tube that goes from the valve to the exhaust manifold. I used penetrating oil on the nut and it came loose, you could also use a propane torch to heat the nut ,CAREFULLY. The problem is getting a wrench on the nut and actually turning it, there is no room to swing the wrench, you have to be a little creative. If you have the EGR valve off --replace it. Also a good time to check the tube going from the valve to the exhaust manifold, they rot out and then you have a large exhaust leak. You really don't want to try and remove the wiper motor unless you really have to.

I played the 3/4" shuffle a few weeks ago when I changed the oil pan gasket on my 4.9L. I finally took a claw hammer placed it on the rear of the oil pan and pulled down and it came down nice and easy.

When I put it back up, I used a bottle jack put pressure on the back of the pan and it slid up and forward.
