Changing Instument Clusters
I have a 1999 Eddie Bauer Expedition...Recently someone broke in and smashed my steering colum and broke the instrument cluster. I mean destroyed it. I need to replace it and I found a couple on E-bay, my question is that how do the miles transfer from one to another. My expy only has 85k on it and if I find one with more or less miles what will the outcome be? Also, is there any special programing that I need to have done once I receive it?

The only way to get your milage transfered to another odometer is to buy one new from Ford. If you get a used one, just take some pics of them side by side to document the discrepancy. No programming should be required. Make sure you one from a 99 up though.

If the odometer is digital, the mileage is stored in the cluster itself. If you have a chipped key to start the truck, changing the cluster will result in 'no start'--the pats chip in the cluster has to be matched to the pats chip in the truck itself. Should be able to take the new cluster to Ford dealer and get it matched with your truck, but its not cheap.

rebuilders............
There are several auto rebuilders where you send your cluster to them. they have special software on a computer, and special patch cords which go from the printer port on the computer to the cluster. You tell them the miles you want, and when it is returned to you, presto chango, thats what is on it. Very common to professional auto rebuilders.
