Vehicle is 2001 XLT sport. I checked numerous posts here but still unsure if this is a problem. Here goes. I am trying to find out if A4WD is actually working. Moving the switch from A4WD to 4H the 4 x 4 indicator on the dash lights up and a clicking is heard coming from the dash but no thump is heard indicating that it is engaging (i'm almost certain I used to hear a thump before). The thump is definitely heard when switching from 4H to 4L (the 4 x 4 Low range indicator also comes on) and back to 4H. Also, intermittently, when driving in A4WD and making a slow speed U-turn, there is a binding in the front wheels. Is this normal?
Thanks for any input!
My Dad's 2000 expy has the exact same problem. It will shift between 4Hi and 4Lo, but nothing happens when shifting between A4wd and 4Hi (lights do come on). When making tight turns it would bind like it was in 4Hi. You could pull the shift motor and varify that it is working correctly, if it is working (like ours was), you are going to have to take it to the dealer and see what they say. When we took the expy to the dealer they confermed what we suspected, the transfer case was shot and needed to be replaced. For a temporary solution, you could do like what we did and pull the front driveshaft, that way nothing will be binding.
