My power steering pump return hose leaks like a horse with half a kidney! The original one is long gone so I replace with some high press. hose from ACE, but I cant seem to tighten it enough to stop it from leaking. Those stupid hose clamps just strip out! Please help! What do you guys use to replace the hose? Are the original ones still available? It is a 78 f150, 351M 4x4.
You can buy a replacement hose from Napa or most other parts stores BUT they'll charge more $$ than it's worth. If you are putting a rubber hose onto the portions of hard line in the system make sure they're flared at the ends (preferably double flared) to ensure a good seal so the hose can't slide off. Also, make sure you're using the right size hose. I'm not using stock Ford steering anymore but if I remember right it's a 5/16"ID hose that you'll want to sleeve that metal line properly. I may be wrong here, it's been quite a while so double check your measurements. Lastly, the grooves in hose clamps tend to bend when they're tightened (or overtightened) which will make them slip and strip out later. If you haven't already done it go to any hardware store and get some brand new clamps, make sure they're the right size and not too big. You should be able to tighten it up no problem.
