Power steering

I need to replace the return hose on the power steering. Can I just replace it with a hose long enough to reach from the steering box to the pump? Why is the stock one so long? It is on a 94 302 auto.

Thanks

The length isn't critical and you can use transmission line instead to save some bucks.

On mine the return line goes from the stearing box down to the frame then zigzags along the frame like three times then goes to the resorvoir. This can't be just for decoration can it?

The high pressure line has to be a high pressure line with the necessary fittings. The low pressure line needs to be connected to the factory P/S fluid cooler to aid in cooling the fluid and keeping it from losing viscosity and cavitating the P/S pump. The metal coil of return (low pressure) line that wraps across the lower crossmember of the frame a couple of times is the factory P/S fluid cooler.
