My alternator showed the same symtoms as yours, replacing it fixed all my troubles. Sometimes it is the easiest fix and not a terrible problem!

If your alternator died while you were driving your truck, (as you said the volt meter dropped) then all of the electircal power to run your truck (which is alot) is being pulled straight from the batteries without being replaced by your alternator. This will kill you batteries. Also if your voltage regulator goes bad and sticks shut it will drain your batteries. The best way to monitor your charging system is with an ammeter not a volt meter. This gives you a ture reading on power draining or being replaced to your batteries.

As it turns out the fix was as easy as replacing the alternator ! The batteris had to be drained while the truck set at work , I only have a five minute drive to work ( not enough to drain two batteries ) then sits for twelve hours .
