Fitting in a box?

k heres my problem
i bought an infinity reference series sub and i have a q logic truck box. the sub's magnet is huge and the back of the sub won't fit flush with the box in the top portion but it only misses by about 3/16 of an inch. would it be ok to cut some of the back of the box down or can i get anything to go under the sub or what?
the box is flat and then has a circular enclosure plastic piece surrounding the sub that drops down into the bix about a half an inch...
thanks
Jesse

If you can, return the sub and get one that fits. You could possibly use a router to gain enough clearance for the sub to fit, but you still need some space between the magnet structure and the back of the enclosure to ensure enough air for cooling your sub's voice coil. This is seldom mentioned, but I believe it is a common reason for sub failure. If the voice coil gets hot enough, it will distort out of shape or fail completely. People who know little about how speakers work just think they "blew" their sub, when actually their lack of knowledge caused the failure. Your sub's magnet should not be against the enclosure, period. In home audio 3 inches clearance is a common rule. That's usually not feasible in car audio, but it's something to shoot for. People will say they've run their magnets right against the box with no trouble. That may be true, but it's still not the way to do it if it's avoidable. This is more critcal for subs with a vented pole piece, noticeable by a hole in the middle of the magnet.

you could make a ring (like a spacer ) to move the sub more out of the box
