Where to find a VIN on the frame?
Speaking of VIN numbers, where can I find the VIN on the frame of my '77 F-250. My title states the truck is a '77, but the truck is a mutt, and has had just about every body part replaced. The cab is a '79, the doors are from different '77's the nose is a '77 (original I think), and the bed is out of a '78. My VIN on the title does not match the one in the door, or the one in the cab. I'd like to see if I can find the VIN anywhere else so I can make sure I've got the same VIN somewhere, just in case i get asked at an inspection or something. I'm not sure if the truck has the original engine or tranny. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Brendan, I have found them to be on top of the passenger side rail just ahead of where the front axle crosses under. It should be near the inner edge going from front to back. Take a wire brush or a piece of paper and pencil and do a trace. There is a second one on that same rail under the cab.

OK OK, now I feel stupid. I just spent a half an hour under the truck, and I cant find the VIN anywhere. I'm not sure what I'm looking for though. Will this be a metal plate, like on the doors, or just the numbers inscribed into the frame? I'll have to look again tomorrow.

It is usually Stamped into the Right Front Frame Rail.
Stamped means with a Punch tool with a letter or number on the end. It's embedded into the steel.

Brendan, First of all, raise the hood, and on the passenger side look down to the frame rail, between the radiator support and front axle. The number as Dennis stated should be stamped into the metal with 3/16" or 1/4" numerals. It should be about where the edge of the inner fender is.
We have already told you it was on top of the rail, and you went under the truck looking for it, so I'm not sure you can find it after all. ;-)
