Starts fine in the morning, starts fine after sitting at the office all day. But if you run out and go on an errand midday. Truck sits for 20 mins won't start. Hear the click on the fender at the starter relay. Can push to roll and clutch start it everytime. Power is not the issue, all lights, stereo and other accesories work fine even when it won't start.
So do we need a starter? If so any suprises to avoid on replacement?
Sounds like the starter may be heat soaking. If the lights are on, do they go dim when the relay clicks? That would definitely indicate that the starter is getting power but not turning.
If you kick the right front tire in the forward quadrant, it should start right up. Worked for me.
Does sound heat related. But could be a battery too. When it doesn't start, can you try and get it jump started? Could also be a bad + cable to the starter - too much resistance. Keep digging.
My BII sometimes did that. Turned to be a bad connection between the batter post and the cable (the clamp on the cable wasn't gripping the battery post tight enough).
If it's just a click, I'd look more like the others are saying, towards a loose or dirty connection, or an intermittent failure inside the solenoid. It sounds like the power isn't being drained through the starter which probably means it's not getting to the starter.
Took the battery out, had it tested. It failed bought new battery. Cleaned all connectors at the battery and the relay. Drove it for 15 mins. Turned it off. Click. Nada. Also bought a starter, replacing that next.
yea, i'm thinking starter or solenoid or cables going to both.....when you can't start it and it makes the click, can you jump the leads on the solenoid and then start it?
