I am sure we have been down this road, couldnt find it from before. Gaskets or no gasket on the 390 exhaust manifold. Have not removed them yet but my pasenger side front is leaking, appears to be a thin gasket in there. Also any Stans header users out there, any clearance problems? I have factory air, 74 F250 camper special with the sway bar. Stans rep says no problems.
Most of the original ford installations did not have a gasket installed. FE exhaust manifolds are known to warp. If you are going to keep the manifold, remove it and check to see if it is warped. Once it is out, also check the exhaust ports with a straight edge. Once they are both flat you can use a gasket if desired.
I have not heard of those headers before. I run Hooker Competition ceramic coated headers on my 1969 F100 with a 390, AT, & AC. If you are running Edelbrock or CJ heads, there nay be a port mismatch if regular truck headers are used.

It was a steel shim type that was embossed around the ports with extra material sticking out to protect the spark-plug boots. Some auto parts suppliers still carry ‘em but they’re called heat shields. Check first for flatness like Reggie says and use anti-seize on the manifold bolts. There are some users here running Stan’s and swear by them, am almost tempted to run some myself.
I had my manifolds machined. Now they fit like a glove and seal very tightly. When I run out of projects around the house, kids graduate from college and the wife no longer wants anything new I'll probably drop the ~$300 for the Sandersons...or maybe Santa will bring a new set this year.
