First thing, I'm new to this forum. I have a 2002 F350 4-door. I was wondering if anyone has had the problems that I am having. First, my steering gets hard when I stop and try to back up or get into a parking space. I had it at the dealer and they say this is common with these trucks (no fix), which I'm having a hard time believing? Second, I keep warping my rotors. If anyone could give me suggestions on either problem, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.
Same problem with rotors , 2001 f350 crew cab 4x4 7.3 .Two sets already at 120,000 miles.I have been looking at a set of the cyrogenic slotted rotors from one of the sponsors . Waiting to see if there are some responses to your link .
The steering is a problem at idle, I think Ford dropped the ball and didn't make a smaller diameter pulley. Other possible fix's are to flush out the fluid and use a thicker fluid or synthetic. Also a remote cooler could help. Thicker fluid will equal more pressure. Or up the idle a little??? The rotors are another sore item with these trucks. Driving habits could possibly extent the life of them. I've ridden with people that have a weird driving style (anything different then mine MUST be weird???) and can see how some rotors don't last as long as others. Keeping them cool is how to prevent them from warping.
Yea, same problems here. The steering doesn't bother me cause mines a stick I just got used to revin it up allittle when not moving. The rotors are a different story.... I just replaced them in April and there already warped. I'm also thinking about slotted rotors.
I have 43,000 miles on my 04 Super Crew XLT. So far I have had the rotors replaced once and turned twice. This fixes the problem for about 3000 miles, but it always comes back. By the way, now that my truck is out of warranty, I was told by my dealer that it would be $175 to turn the rotors and over $500 to replace them. Oddly enough, a friend of mine has a 2005 Super Crew Lariat with 23,000 miles and his brakes still stop smoothly! I wish I knew what the difference was, since both of us are pretty easy drivers.
Hey jjones, stay away from the dealer if you can help it , price is high. You can get oem for around 90.00 a piece. DONT KNOW What the deal is , but either you have rotor problems or you dont.Couple of guys where I work are having the same problems,It could be driving habits, but I think its more heat related than anything , the mountains do mine in every time and it does'nt take much.At work I putt around in a 74,000 pd truck so I know that its not my driving habits, but sometimes other peoples habits affect mine!!! I sure all of you know what I'm talking about there if you are on the road alot. Waiting for someone to post something about the slotted/ drilled rotors before I buy them.
Performance Friction rotors and pads will solve the warpage and sorry stopping in these trucks. They are a little higher than most but well worht the value you get from them along with the increased stopping performance. As for a cross drilled rotor, be prepared to replace again. Every crosss drilled rotor I have seen will begin to stress and heat crack between the holes. This is mainly on autos. I would hate to see the effects from a 8000lb truck. If anyone has a question about their super duty or excursion brakes give me a call.
I'd be careful of slotted/drilled rotors only because more surface area = more stopping power and vice versa. I'd look more for the metal composition in the rotors. The slotted ones people like probably are made with a better metal mix. I also believe Ford should've designed the rotors to have a bigger diameter, cause we're all fighting a common problem. A possible band-aid is to install ducting to direct cool air on to the rotors (NASCAR can't be wrong).
