I have a Garmin Etrex Legend. I've had it for a year and love it. A buddy baught me MapSource TOPO U.S. today. Anybody know if these maps are locked? I keep reading about locked maps and a 25digit code to unlock them. I can view them all just fine on the computer, but it will only let me transfer waypoints, tracks, and routes to my gps, not the maps. I hit "Transfer" then "Send to device" it finds my gps but the box to click to transfer maps isn't highlighted. I've looked everywhere in the box and Cd's, even had it search my gps for the code, can't find it. But it hasn't asked me for a code either. It's a legit copy, $100 brand new from Cabela's. I've registered it, and looked for a Garmin GPS forum, but with no luck. I expect to get my Buddy's money's worth outta this program, it cost enough.
I just found where it says: "If your Garmin GPS unit supports compact flash or Secure Digital cards: only maps can be transfered to a CF or SD card in a Garmin GPS unit from MapSource. No other date types can be transfered." I'm trying to find out now if my GPS is one of the two.
I got a Garmin GPS for Christmas, not the same model though. Got the city map software too. In the box there was piece of paper with short code, about eight characters I think. I had to use that code to retreive the unlock code. Not sure I could tell you the exact process. I kind of fumbled through the whole thing, but I did get the software unlocked and was able to download maps to the GPS.
