To date I have steered away from aftermarket code readers. However, I am getting tired of finding a mechanic or dealer that I trust to read a code to me. Plus I am not in a area where code readers are common with mechanics unless I go to the dealer
So my question is this: Are the code readers now worth anything? I am not talking about $100 readers. I would not shy away from a $4-500 reader if it works. Some of the people I have talked to, have told me that unless you shell out a couple grand or more you are just wasting your money. That may be, but popping $80 everytime the light comes on gets old, let alone finding the time to drive over and leave the truck/car for a day.
psst....can I let you in on a little secret? Find an Auto Zone and ask if they have a diagnostic specialist that works there. Auto Zone will be doing this free of charge real soon. I should know...I am one We just recently started pulling codes off of vehicles for customers free of charge and letting them take it to whom ever they choose. This way all they have to do is hand the tech the code number and he can go from there. I've had quiet a few tell me this is real handy and saves a lot of $$$ for them. I enjoy doing it. I work as a diagnostic specialist for Auto Zone and pull codes at the community college during class too. If your local AZ doesn't do it tell them they need to get some of their people into training for it. It'll help them out as well as the customers.
