My early '99 F350 has defaulted to defrost. The vacuum pump is going whenever I start it up. I can't find any leaks or disconnects behind the glove box. The ESOF seems to work just fine. What should I do next?
Is the truck a 4x4? The auto hubs run on vacuum. Check the line at wheels to make sure there alright. You could also unhook them and try plugging them to see if that makes a differance. The seal in the wheel could be bad. Hope this helps!
Yes. It's 4x4. I use the 4x4 at least 2x a month. I had the passenger side vac line replaced at the dealer a little over a year ago. The thing is the ESOF is engaging and the 4x4 works good. At this point I'm wondering if the device "actuator??" that controls the flap to redirect air to the floor could be bad. I am able to lift the rod (with a bit of efffort) to make it move, but it just goes right back when you let go. It is behind the glove box to the left and has a yellow and a blue vac line attached. Come to think of it I did pull those lines and could feel no suction or blowing when I turn the **** to floor air. Thanks for your input Lancer.
Lancer, I found the drivers side vac hose completely off. So I cut 1/2" off and put it back on - no floor heat still. So I plugged the red line to the vac solenoid and Yippe I now have warm feet! I guess I need to learn a little more about being in or out of 4X4. I am still unclear on how to find another leak or how to test the solenoid. Any ideas?
Thanks!
JM
no vac with either or both hub lines plugged - does this mean I need a new solenoid vacuum switch? The dealership mechanic told me today to replace the vac. pump - that it isn't producing enough vacuum. I'm not sure what to think?!??
If you plugged the red vac line to the solenoid and now you have floor heat, IMO your solenoid not working. It sounds like the vaccuum pump is putting out enough vaccuum because you got floor heat. Plug that line and check other postions. If you get heat coming out of the panel and floor, you know that the supply line is good and the vaccuum pump is working. The vaccuum hub lock lock solenoid p/n 6C3Z9H465 BA cost me $51 dollars. I just went thru this myself and not only was the solenoid bad, knew this because I had 4x4 engaging problems, the supply line had a slight pinch. So when I replaced the solenoid, I still only had heat frm the defrost. Fixed the line also everything worked.
My vacuum pump runs all the time when the ac/heat control is set on OFF or VENT... never did bother to figure out where the leak was because I never knew where on earth to start. I know mine isn't a 4x4 issue becuase the pump will stop in defrost or floor. Weird. I hate ventilation systems. Whether I'm on my ship or working on the truck... its always a pain in the A**.
Well the new switch solved the vacuum leak issue.
Now I've got all my heater controls and the hublocks work great. I'm sure glad I listened to you guys instead of the dealer mechanic! Thanks again for the input.
If anyone has questions re:this issue I'm glad to share my experience with it.
