Hey guys this is my first time posting on the diesel forum. I am about to go check out a diesel van my brother is purchasing it is a 1999 E-350 with a 7.3L Diesel. It has 93000+ miles on it. What are some common problems I can look for with this setup? That is what are some tell tale signs this Diesel has issues? Are the automatics any good on these vehicles? Just let me know what ya'll think.
If the coolant is orange, no test is necessary, and you can disregard all that follows.
If the coolant is GREEN, however, it requires some chemicals to be added periodically.
Get some coolant test strips at the dealer or heavy diesel repair facility, and dip one in the coolant according to directions on the packaging. If the anti-cavitation chemicals are up to spec, it's likely the rest of the engine was also properly maintained.
No chemicals at all could spell BIG trouble, with pin-holes in the cylinder walls etched out by cavitation into the water jackets. Sleeving or replacing the motor is the fix for that, so it's a VERY IMPORTANT thing in our world.
