Missfire or Tranny?

Have a missfire or shuddering when lugging in overdrive about 45 Mph at 1200 RPM. Check engine light or OD light has not come on yet. When you turn the OD off it seam to go away. I hope it's just a COP going bad under load. Maybe the light will come on in the next day or so.

Sounds like a COP going bad. Like you said, if you wait it out the light might eventually come on. I've seen them not though. Find a shop with a diagnostic scanner capable of doing a cylinder balance test. The new Ford PDS has that function. You can view live cylinder misfire data and isolate the missing cylinder without the check engine light/codes.

Good luck

Sometimes it will store a code before the light is lit, you may try to scan it anyway.

Yeah Ive seen that too - we have a quick scanner with a "Read Codes" function and a "Pending Codes" function. Sometime you will find codes not illuminate the CEL and be stored in the Pending Codes.

I'll have it scanned tomorrow at Autozone. Maybe I'll get lucky.

THANKS

Had it scanned at Autozone today and it had no code stored yet.

Having the cylinder power balance test would not show a misfire if its not acting up at the time correct? It does not act up all the time. Today it only did it for about 10 seconds.

Maybe I'll do it the old school way and buy one new cop and rotate it to each cylinder untill the problem stops.

With the cylinder balance test, you can view live misfire data on the graph. But it also logs the data on the graph. If I have a COP missing with no CEL or codes, you just need to hook up the scan tool and drive the vehicle for about 5 minutes. The graph will store which cylinder missed (even if you don't feel it) and just replace that coil. I had a 4.6 Crown Vic a week or so ago and the customer complained for a miss only at takeoff but he said he had only felt it a few times. I did the cylinder balance test and it recorded a dip in cyl 5 - which I never felt driving it. Put the new COP on and he said its run perfect since.

So basically from my experiences, the missing cylinder shows up on the graph whether you feel the miss or not.

Good luck!

Truck started to misfire today so I held the RPM steady till the Service Engine light came on.
When to DEQ and had it scanned P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected.
I replaced cop on cylinder 1 and cleared the codes. I hope this takes care of the problem.

THANKS

I didn't see what year your truck is...but a common problem is Coil#4. I replaced mine about a 1.5 years ago and have my truck apart right now doing the same thing again. At that time I replaced all of my plugs with Motorcraft Platinmu AWSF 22E and replaced coil#4. Then about a few months ago I had the same kind of 'missing' problem. It felt identical ot my previous problem. Finally recorded code and Autzone showed misfire on #4. I heard that the problem with #4 is because of the heater house running above can sometimes drip and the coolant has a chemical that eatas away at the coil lining. I can't imagine that being the same problem with the 1.5 year old coil. I was actually on tonight to see how to properly test my old coil before I put a new plug AND new coil on #4. I'll post that in a minute. Anyway...if you still have problems, check the evil #4!!! Oh mine is a 98 F-150 8cyl 5.4. Good luck. Let us know the outcome!

For CCORAM,

Similar issue different motor. You seem to have seen a few of these issues so I thought I'd run a question by you. I had a pronounced mis on my 97 4.2L, new OEM plugs and wires didn't help. I have a scanner on my laptop and run it all the time on long trips. Kept seeing a type of mis on the #2 and occaissoinally #5. It's a coil pack so I switched the wires for the two and the miss seems to have gone away, or at least I don't feel it anymore. Any thoughts on why this would fix it? I thought by switching the wires the mis would have been worse in the #5. Just curious.

Got my 99 back from the shop last weekend and it was the wires not the plugs that were causing my mis fire. Bought the truck used in 2001, previous owner had used Champion plugs and aftermarket wires, there was major carbon tracking on the sides of the plugs.
