Question fuel pump or ?

Any help at all thanks.I have an 89 ford 300 six 5spd.4x4. EFI. I drove down to local hardware store to get horse feed. Turned my truck off came out and the truck will not start. Had to tow home. I can spray starter fluid in it and it will crank but then die after it has burned the starter fluid.I thought it was the pump so i took the fuel pump off the frame and connected it to 12 volts and it works. However when i check the connectors that go to the pump im getting to juice. I had my wife turn the key on so i could check it within a few seconds just in case the relays or anything cut my juice off but nothing there. Not sure where to start at now. Stumped waiting for any replys .thanks for any help..

I would try resetting the Inertia Fuel Shut-off switch first. Just push down on the button on top of it.
Here is a diagram of your system.

If you have power at both pumps, then chances are one is bad. Pull the lines off the inlet of the frame pump, put them in a clear container, and turn the key. If you get fuel, then the frame pump is bad. If there isn't any fuel, the problem is the tank pump, but the fuel pressure should be checked still to make sure the frame pump is doing it's job.
This sounds pretty typical of how a pump goes, they tend to fail when shut off, rather than dying while driving.
Thanks for supplying the diagram link, subford. I'm going to post that in the diagnosis thread.

I agree, it could be a bad low pressure pump in the tank that is not feeding the high pressure pump on the frame.

But he said he was not getting any power to the pumps.

We need to know if his EEC Power Relay clicks when the key is turned to the on position and if the Fuel Pump Relay comes on for one second after the key is in the on position.

Oh, must have misread the original post. Check the green relay (fuel pump).

Thanks subford. i checked my inertia switch. is has not been tripped. its still set. isn't it suppose to be up if tripped? however i did try pushing it down but it seems to be still set. ive got my pump off the rail and it works but im not getting fuel from the tank pump dosn;t seem to me unless its holding in the fuel filter just before this pump.
