Unknowing to me,someone decided to give my 5 year old step daughter some nail polish. WHich as you can guess wound up all over her bedroom carpet. Anyone have any ideas on how to remove it,? Will regular nail polish ruin the carpet? Anyone with similar experience? Happy new year to all.
Acetone is the main ingredient in nail polish remover. I would use standard hardware grade acetone on a carpet rather than nail polish remover (which may have color and moisturizer in it), both because of price and so that it doesn't add to the staining on the carpet.
We had something similiar happen, Grandma gave daughter a 4 pak of polish, only knew about one bottle. We had to replace the carpet as the acetone was attacking the backing and wasn't getting the polish out anyway. PS this "gift" was was from someone who cringes at letting a kid drink water in her kitchen, and does everything she can to keep the kids from visiting her place. Can you meet me at the Mall, Restuarant, etc. We've never stayed overnight there. I really wanted to give one kid a can of spray paint and the other a magic marker, and pay a visit, after I got the bill for the new carpet.
^^^ that site is correct i use to clean carpets ... BUT you may not be ablem to get it completly out in that case you have 3 options deal with the stains, get new carpet,or (i did this for many hotels) put small amount of bleach on a WHITE rag and dab it then hurry up with a dry cloth and dab it then a wet cloth with water and make sure u get it good and wet otherwise the bleach can eat threw the carpet when your done doing this your carpet it gonna be a light color (deppending on its original color of the carpet) then get cloth die and mix and match till you get a match then test on a cloth to see what color it dries then dab it on with a clean cloth
If the polish is completely dry, try using greased lightening on it. I used to use that to take gum out of carpets. Spray it on, let it sit for five minutes or so, then scrub it hard with a wet white towel. It should come right out, since that stuff is very slick and wicks into the fiber underneath the polish. Once you get the polish out, you will probably have to have the carpet cleaned to even it out.
if a lot of it is just little drops dried to the fiber and not smeared/rubbed in you can take a small scissors and cut the individual fibers that are affected; only do that on a cut-pile, not a berber.
CAreful using solvents, Latex is integral in carpet construction and solvents used incorrectly may/will ruin a carpet.
