Bonus Built school bus

I found this in the lasted issue of Hemmings. If I was 1500 miles closer and $7400 richer I would jump on it in a minute, or least check it out:

My wife is a school bus driver and this would bring both of our passions together. How driving a bus load of screaming brats can be a passion I don't know but it's what she likes to do . She said it was "Cute" This would great next with my other trucks. I like the odd trucks!

ALBUQ F-1, bobbytnm it's in your neighborhood, Agua Fria, about an hour away. I think it would be a nice addition to either of your collections.

What chassis is this sitting on, anybody know? F-3 because of the SRW, or maybe F-4 or 5 from the look of the wheel size? Or is there room in back for DRW, and they're just not there, suggesting an F-4/5 with 18" or bigger Budds. If it's an F-3 with 17" Budds it's the first I've seen use them other than the MHs.

I think it's sitting on a F-5 chassis. The F-5 school bus chassis came with a 158" or 194" wheel base. This bus could have been shorten over the year too.

I don't know how Carpenter worked then, but today if they get a special order for 0ne or two special vehicles they just whack the frame of one of the many standard chassis they have around.
I had to go there when they were building a custom vehicle for the local hazmat team.

Ferggy

I knew there could be a few shots coming my way and since the first one is always the worst I thought it would be better if I took it.

Penn "Short Bus" Dick

Now that don't sound right at all.

As to driving a bus load of screaming brats, try driving a bus load of college kids. I did this for 2 years in college and would take the elementary kids anyday. At least you could tell them to shut up or quieten down a little, the college kids would just tell you to F#@& OFF!!!

Very neat find bob. I have always liked old school buses (Don't know why, I hated riding on them).

PRO49, that is a very cool one too (I just think they chopped a little to much of it up, but still very cool).

Great finds guys.

The catalog lists a B-5 and a B-6, the busses weren't designated using the F-x nomenclature. I suppose the short bus might be a B-5?

mechmagcn,

If you drive school kids today you can't tell them to "shut up". You'll get into trouble, you have to tell them to "quiet down" and "please talk quietly" or else you'll have a bunch of parents calling the bus company yelling about how abusive you are and you'll getting transferred. It would have to be a extremely cold day you know where before I would hold back from telling some snotty ten year to "shut the h*** up!"

As for the students telling you to "F#@& OFF!!!", even if you have little Johnny on tape saying it to a bus driver mommy and daddy will deny he ever did it and tell you "my little Johnny would never say such a thing and he said he didn't" This happens all the time.

From James K. Wagner; the 48-50 busses were built on the F-5 chassis, designated the School Bus Safety Chassis. No 134 " were offered, but as previously stated, a district could order whatever size they wanted, the body company would then commence to hacking.
As a school teacher, I have to agree with Bob. What makes it worse is when the administration (vice principal) wants to quibble with the teacher as to whether "f&%k" was used as a noun, adjective, or verb before metering out punishment. Of course far too many parents buy into that instead of why the kid used that language to an adult. Too bad the schools aren't able to discipline as they did when that old bus was new.

I'd give this guy $5k and trailer it home.

I think that it's worth at least $5k, depending on the interior condition. You just don't find any Bonus Built schoolbuses anymore. Especially, the short bus version. It's perfect size for a restoration.
