I heard what sounded like my transmission fragmenting at my feet, but when I jacked my '98 Ranger 2wd 5 spd up, I found a cast iron ring floating(for the lack of a better term) at the business end of my drive shaft by the transmission yolk. What the heck is that?...what is it for?...what do I have to do to replace/repair it?...and, can I eliminate it?... because I have it tied off away from the u-joint and the little truck is performing like my favorite vehicle again.
Thank you all for your responces, I looked at the photo you refered to El Con, and it is exactly what I had experienced. It shall be removed at my first opportunity, and I may use it as a cup holder also...Thanks again, everyone...Tomm
Tomm,
I had the same issue with my truck. In fact it was researching this problem that led me to these forums. I had a couple of people ( one guy worked at a driveshaft shop) tell me that I probably wouldn't need it. I was told the purpose of it was to help the tranny shift smoother. I don't know if that is true or not. At around 80 mph on the interstate I noticed a severe vibration. It felt like the truck was stalling. I replaced the collar and the vibration went away. If you decide you don't want to replace be sure to test drive it. The local Ford dealer priced the part at around $98.
Thanks Tim, although I would never have the desire to drive 80 off of the race track, I think this a still reason enough to get the piece replaced due to it being that severe at 80 I'm sure 70 or 75 it is probably still doing its fair share of damage that I just don't feel behind the wheel. Appreciate the response...Tomm
