Ignition Switch problem
I have a 1992 XLT/2dr/3.0/5 spd/124k miles/orig owner. Recently when I started my truck the ignition switch (internally) would not return to the normal position and the starter just kept going even though the engine started. If I turned the key to the off position the engine would stop but the starter just kept going. At first I thought it was a solenoid problem under the hood, but after removing the negative battery terminal to make it stop, I found that not to be the case. I sprayed some WD40 deep into the igniton keyhole and that solved the problem for the moment but a couple of days later it did it again.
My question is this...do I need to change the internal ignition switch or is it just gummed up? If I do have to change it, is it something I can do or is it more complex and needs a professional to work on it? Or does it just need to removed and given a good cleaning.
Thanks for the help
