Hi. Ive got this 93 F150 2wd 302/AOD. It's the trans that you move the shift lever into O/D, not the one with the button on the end of the shift ****. Anyhow, the problem lies when the trans comes out of O/D. It upshifts fine with no slippage but any time the trans comes out of O/D it BANGS. Hard.
When you slow down. BANG. When you kick down to pass. BANG. or take it out of O/D manually, you guessed it. BANG.
Now I'm a heavy equipment mechanic by trade but I've never dealt with these trannys before. Is there some kind of adjustment I can make without any special tools? Is the tranny ready to go bye-bye? Any help or advice appreciated.
I used to have a '90 F250 7.3L with an E4OD, and I had the same problem. No problem up or downshifting, just in and out of OD. Trans guys said it could have been a band or broken valve, but the trans finally went bye-bye. Knew it was coming though, because the trans fluid was black, and had a horrible burnt smell. I never knew transmission fluid could catch on fire until the day it finally went out.
Welcome to FTE billy. Your transmission is the AOD tranny. This tranny is non electronic and determines it shift points and line pressure by the cable that is runnin from your throttle linkage to the transmission governor.
I wouldn't say that your transmission is dieing on you, but maybe just your overdrive. I'd change the fluid and see what happens. Apparrently for some reason it is increasing line pressure dramatically to allow it to shift into overdrive.
