Greetings, I just found this site and and found it to be very informative so I put in for my membership the other day.
I have a 1992 Ford E150 conversion van and by checking the VIN #'s
found that it's a 5.0 with according to the tag on the door jamb an AOD transmission.
On the transmission pan it sez "Automatic Overdrive Metric"
Is this a standard AOD trans.?
One of the two major problems I'm having is that when it trys to
shift into overdrive it just acts like I put it in neutral.
When I give it a little gas when it's supposed to be in O/D I can
feel a little tug like it's trying to go in but the engine just
revs up.
I've been a backyard machanic for over 30 years, but I never
messed around with automatic transmissions, so when I take it to
The tranny shop I would like a few suggestions from you guys as
to what it might be so they don't try to screw me over. Other then O/D the trans shifts very nicely through the first three
speeds. And yes,I changed the fluid and filter and all the linkage
looks to be in tact.
Second problem, The speedometer and odometer are dead.I checked all
the fuses under the dash and under the hood and they are good.
I have no idea where it pulls the speed or mileage from, one book sez
it pulls it from the trans, another sez from the rear end, and another
sez from someplace on the front wheels but I can't find any sending
units in any of those places.
Any suggestions would be very helpful as that money is very limited
at this time.
Did the OD go out shortly after you changed the fluid the first time? If so, you MIGHT get it back by changing the fluid again soon. When the fluid isn't changed for a long time, deposits build up inside the trans, but they don't really hurt anything. When you change to fresh fluid, the new detergent can break up the deposits, clogging passages & fouling the clutches. That's why some people say never to change the fluid, but that's not really the solution. If you change it a second time in about 1-2Kmi, you can flush it out & not have a problem, but then again, it may be hopeless. Talk to a transmission shop you trust.

And get a wiring diagram. I have the Helm diagrams, but my scanner isn't big enough to copy them. Haynes manuals have good diagrams and only cost $12 at most parts stores.
Thanks for the reply. The reason I changed the fluid and filter is because the O/D dropped out, I thought it was a good place to start on my own before putting myself at the mercy of a transmission shop.We have like four tranny shops here but two of them are Brand X shops but I know better then that, and one is a National transmission shop that this one anyhow, has a reputation for insisting that you need a new transmission no matter what the problem is.
I know this to be true because they told my mother several years back that she needed a new trans when afterward I checked it out and found that all it needed was a vacuum modulator that I put in for $8.00.
Now we have a new one called Cottman's Transmissions that opened recently, but I don't know anything about them, but they claim to give you an eleven point tranny check for free so I guess I'll check them out this Monday.
Sounds like your overdrive band is going or gone. If you turn your overdrive switch off and shift into manual 2nd at higher speeds you will probably find that it acts much like when it shifts into overdrive ie. spinning up like in neutral. Manual 2nd shares the overdrive band in the aod. Won't solve your problem but might give you an idea of what is wrong in there.
I don't have an overdrive switch, this is an AOD, no electronics involved in this trans at all. No wires going to the transmission. According to Chilton's, which doesn't go into transmissions very much sez that it shifts into O/D mechanically at a certain speed.
Your post sez you have a AODE, whats the difference between that and an AOD ? Too many variations of transmissions nowadays. I still don't know why it sez "Automatic Overdrive Metric" on the pan. I guess I'll find out this week when I take it to the shop but I'll ask them about the O/D band and I think one of the books said something about a servo for the O/D shift. Thanks
