My dad has a 99 Ranger V6 4.0l and he is having problems with one of the plugs burning out after he replaces the plug it runs fine but then after a month or so it idles rough and the gas mileage goes down south. What is the cause of this, and what corrective action should be taken
Does the plug look like it is fouling out? If so, the plug wire could be bad. Or,
if it looks burned up, it could be due to a vacuum leak making that cylinder run lean, which makes it run hotter.
I'll check for a vacuum leak and also check the resistance on the plug wire. Thanks for the input if you can think of anything else and help is appreciated.
I suppose you can never rule out base engine concerns when contemplating the cause of a misfire, and with the 4.0L that could mean a leaky intake (upper and/or lower) gasket or even head gasket. Oil or coolant can make it's way into the cylinder and/or compression could be lost, which would ultimately cause misfires and foul plugs.
If the misfire persists and you run out of things to try, you might consider having a Used Oil Analysis (UOA) done, it could help you determine whether coolant (i.e., sodium, potassium) is mixing in with the oil which would likely identify a gasket problem.
