Hi there, new user and loving it. I cleaned the tb on my 93 3.0 the other day( by the way it has 137,000m on it) I have cleaned it before and had the same result. After i cleaned the tb my idle seemed to be erratic and the last time i replaced the idle control valve and it worked, talked to my mech. and he said that it would not fry my control valve. Anyone have any suggestions. Also before cleaning tb ck eng light coming on and off every so often, could this be a problem with maf? I have been running a K&N filter from the start.
I don't want to sound like a pain to a new user but your mechanic is wrong.
What you have done with your cleaning is toasted the idle speed sensor (idle control valve). Well actually, not toasted, but gummed it up and there is no cleaning for it. Once gummed up, it needs replaced. It sits on top of the throttle body slanted towards the rear. This sensor controls a whole slew of items. Before cleaning the TB, you need to remove this sensor.
By the way, how did you clean the throttle body. I hope you did it with kerosene or mineral spirits and not some high VOC like laquer thinner. If you cleaned it with laquer thinner, the interior coating will disolve and you will need to replace it. I learned this the hard way on my 5.0 truck.
The symtoms when this sensor starts going bad is an erratic idle (high rpm, then low rpm), stalling when slowing down or stopping, and transmission miss-shifts (autos only).
Thank you for the reply pmasley on my question. I never thought about first removing the control valve before cleaning my tb. I did however find the problem with the erratic idle, i had left the crankcase vent tube off of my air hose, i will definately remove the valve before cleaning agin. I am using the proper tb cleaner to remove the gunk, it is kind of tough on this engine being that I can not remove the tb itself. Thank you for the info and I love this site.
Actually, myself, I do not use the off the shelf cleaners. I don't know what is in them.
I just use kerosene or mineral spirits and a toothbrush. It takes a little bit of time, but the toothbrush will work all the debris out. Then I blow out the passages with light air, reinstall any sensors (check the entire intake system for sensors - no solvent in any of them - from the airbox to the intake) that I removed, Fire it up and let it draw the solvent through the system. It won't hurt a thing. Actually, it will pull some deposits off the intake valves. Your vehicle may smoke slightly for a few minutes.
