I researched this in the archives but couldn't find an answer. I just installed a new shift collar on my 68 Ranger (auto) but I can't seem to get the upper column back together right. When I put everything back together and tighten down the steering wheel, it's jammed tight against the turn signal housing and won't turn! I don't really know how to describe the rest, but the coupler itself doesn't "bottom out" on the column housing, as if the inner column is pushing up on it (it's springy). It lacks about a quarter to a half inch of being all the way down (enough that it won't engage the neutral safety switch at the bottom of the column). You can push down on the collar and make it go where it belongs, but when you release pressure it springs back out. On the plus side, it shifts great. Any ideas? Am I missing a c-clip retainer or something?
Earl, Call Rick at Carolina Classics 919-682-4211 or 800-598-4211. He rebuilds columns and can tell you what you put in backwards or upside down. :-)

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
Part of the problem is the two nuts at 12 and 6 o'clock, the square head has to go into the slot on the tube and when tightened down hold the shift collar in palace. Then between the clamp and bearing down at the rag joint and the bolts that hold the tube at the dash, you set the end play. It took me a couple of tries to get mine set the way I wanted it so be patient.
429,
DB is on track. The two nuts in the blinker assembly attach to the column tube with the T-bolts. Until you get BOTH of those T-bolts to fasten in the column tube it will "pop" back out on you and you risk grinding up your blinker switch. If I'm not mistaken, this pulls directly on the rag joint at the stearing gear if that fails your in for one hell of a trip. Be Careful and get it fixed!
Good Luck, Have Fun,
