Question Steering column collar

I just recently converted over to power steering and I love it. The reason I did the swap was because my steering column collar stripped, leaving me without steering manually. The other day the truck quit as I was slowing down to stop so I turned the wheel to get out of the road, she did the whole ratchet thing again. It's fine when the power steering is in. Is it bad juju to just drill a hole through the collar and gear box shaft and put a bolt in it to keep it from slipping? I don't think I can tighten the collar up any more. I've also been considering some thead lock.

Go Jaguars!!

You might consider replacing what's broken. It'd be a real shame if you had to correct suddenly, it didn't happen, and you ran over a kid or something.

It works fine when the engine is running, it's when the engine is stopped that there's a problem. I can be reaching for the key to crank it and pull a little too hard on the steering wheel and it'll ratchet. I want to know if anyone has ever drilled a hole through the collar/gear box shaft and put a bolt in it.

Sounds like spline gear on shaft might be stripped take connection apart find the real problem and repair with orginal parts I would not modify steering components and would not drive until problem corrected!!! GOOD LUCK!!! on your repair!!!

The reason it works fine when the engine is running is because the power assist takes a lot of the stress out of everything.

To install a bolt of any appreciable strength, you'd have to drill a hole so big that you'd not have hardly any shaft left in that area.

Is this the collar that slides onto the box under the rag joint? Is it seated all the way? Do you have the proper bolt through it? If the bolt has a long shank (unthreaded area) under the head the bolt may be getting tight before tightening the collar. If these few things check out I'd strongly agree with the others on replacing the worn part or parts. Good Luck
