First of all just wanted to say thanks to all you guys for your valuable input. This forum is the greatest! I do however have a question about carbs. I have a 302 with factory 2 barrel carb that is shot and I need to get an new one. Would a 4 barrel make a huge difference in the power of the truck? Reason being is that I have called around and can get a holley 4 barrel for around the same price as a stock 2. Also looked on holley's site and it shows a 600 cfm. Seems to me that is a little too much for that size engine but what do I know.
Thanks again.

A carb & intake upgrade would make a noticable diff. in power.
Summit sells some decent packages, includes everything you need. And I would stick w/ a 600cfm vac. carb.
302's have some of the most potential of any engines, 600cfm isnt hardly too much, if you get an intake to match up with it you would have some significant HP gains.
The formula for figuring carb size is ci x max rpm then divide that # by 3456 = cfm at 85% eff.
Most stock or close to stock engines are about 85% efficient. That goes up with larger valves, ports, cams, etc.
302 x 5,200 = 1570400 / 3456 = 454.4 cfm
Most of the factory 2bbl Ford carbs are between 350 and 500 cfm.
a 600 with vac. secondarys if you use a Holley. I would recommend using an Edebrock Performer intake and a Performer 600 carb. I use the 750 Performer set on my 460 and it runs great!

Chief,
It's a waste of time and money unless your going to build the rest of the motor. Your cam meters the amount of fuel/air through the motor. If you've got a factory cam you only need a factory carb. They are 500 CFM 2 barrel carbs that really kick butt. You could rebuild and rejet your carb for $20. You'll have no throttle response loss, no low end loss. The only place the factory 2-barel really comes up short is at about 85MPH. How often do you reach top end? I'll bet you drive about 35-45 MPH most of the time. I know I do.
Good Luck, Have Fun,

I drive my truck 99% of the time, I race that 1% and even that is a waste.
