Finally getting back to working/cruising around in my 1974 F100 4x4 auto. So I pulled it into the garage and put it into park and it didn't shift into park. The shift collar broke inside. Didn't think much of it. I had another column sitting on the shelf. Thought that since I had it out I would rebuild it. When I took the spare one apart the shift collar in that one was also about to break. So I figured I would just replace the collar. I went on line and bought a cheap chinese made one. I went to put it together and it didn't fit. It needs some trimming/sanding to work. In the mean time I bumped the little tab on the bottom side of the column and broke off that controls the neutral safety switch.
So getting to my question, can this tab be replaced? If not can the truck be started with out this tab in place? I have checked around local yards and if they have a column they want $150 or more and I have no idea if it's any better then the one ithat am replacing. Looking for some suggestions, thanks!
Ididit makes a nice column for our trucks. Pricey though. I got a column from another member in Missouri for my build. It's going to need some work too. I'll detail that when I start working on it. I'm not familiar with the guts for these columns - yet. I can build GM tilt columns from parts though.
I have a 76 non-tilt with a grant style steering wheel on it sitting here. I was asking $50 on it. I don't know just how far from me Story IA is (I'm in NE just outside of Lincoln) but figured I'd throw it out their at ya

Your short answer is yes the switch can be bypassed. Just don't do it for long, as it is a safety feature.
I do not think a NSS was installed on manual tranny trucks in 73-79. Later trucks had the switch on the clutch pedal but I am pretty sure they had nothing in 73-79.
Thanks again NumberDummy for the help. I was driving thru Albia IA today stopped bt the tiny Ford dealer there and got the NSS switch. I gave the 20 something year old kid the number of the part and he says it looks like we have it. 2 minutes later he comes walking up to the counter with a little blue and white box with an inch of dust on it. Opened it up and there it be. Local dealer order the shift collar for me at the reduced price. I had to do a lot of whining but didn't have to pay the $70 retail.
