My son just got a 80 f250 has a small 6 in it I think its a 240 cid! Not much experence with 6'es. Wont start I checked the timing and with it a TDC its pointing to number 6 not 1. I was told this has no chain only gears? Looks like its been changed before sloppy gasked sealent around cover. First question could it have been timed 180 out and would that make it fire on 6 first? Number 1 cyl is going to one on distro! If its gears would they be able to slip that much everything still spins I also checked the #1 piston when the balancer is up to TDC the #1 piston is only half way up. Any answers out there have to leave my work computer in 2 hours
Its a 1 bbl carb, auto trans, PT,PB, has spark and gas

Bring #1 piston to TDC, make sure it's pushing compression against your finger or whatever. Now if rotor in dist is pointing wrong pull it and index it correctly.

Timing gear has jumped or the plastic timing gears is stripped or broke.
you need to use the marks on the pass side under the alternator, not the ones on the front cover. You want the fine line on the balancer not the large notch.
