I know i have read the answer to this somewhere on here, but i spent an hour searching old threads with no luck, then my computer had an abortion or something and i lost my place searching...so here goes.....i might have a line on a really cheap NP 205 (at least i hope its a 205) this guy says he has a couple tcases that are mated up to 4 speeds.....did they mate 205s to 4 speeds?? and if they did, will it bolt up to my C6?? and how do i identify a 205, i know its cast iron, but what else??thanks guys...
Of course they did, unless its just an extremely!!! popular swap I have half a dozen pictures of my NP435/NP205 in various galleries. If you need more detailed photos, its sitting in the garage and I can snap some tonight for yah
Yes it will bolt to your c6. . .but your going to need the correct adapter. . .I think. Theres a long and short iron adapter used in the pre-80 trucks. They have the upper shift rail notch cut out. The post-80 trucks use BW T-cases, and are aluminum adapters. I have 2 80-86 adapters, that have a squarish notch in about the right spot, but I don't know if the later adapters do. Moot point I quess, you could always just cut the notch I don't know if the aluminum adapter will hold the weight of the NP205 though. . .
EDIT: I didn't see any post-80 trucks in your gallery, so I'm probably just rambling for nothin' then
oh yeah, i guess i should have mentioned this is to go into my 78 F-250 351m C6 to replace the current NP 203.....eventually i will build a doubler with both of them, but for now i just want to get a good tcase in there so i can drive the truck again....i was kinda thinking there was an adapter i would need but i wasnt sure...thanx for the info....
The adapter for the 203 should work for the 205 if I remember right. Worst case scenario you'll have to do some notching on the flange but I think that's only with the later aluminum adapters as mentioned above. I put the 205 adapter up to my 203 range box and all the bolts lined right up.

do the older trucks (79&earlier) have a mount that bolts to the NP205, or is the case supported by adapter??
The 205 will look like a peanut, a lot like the body of the 205 but without that range box hanging off the front. You need a modified shaft and adapter kit for the doubler, which you can get from Stazworks for about $500. Btw, ironically the 203/205 doubler ends up looking a lot like a 203 transfer case.
Bremen, the t-case has a support off the driver's side that bolts to the frame and then there's a crossmember under the adapter.

umm are all 205s supposed to have Iron adapters on them? cause I must have a lot of swapped units if so I haev 4 205s and all of them have alum adaptors on them including the one that came off of a 435 or atleast I think they are all alum, but I know for a fact the one in the truck right now is.

the 205's have a product tag on the rear side of the case and the model will be engraved in that. might need some brake cleaner and a good rag to clean it. prolyl the best way to tell if its a 205 is try and pick it up! if you can't pick it up it's more than likely the 205, lol. these things dry weigh about 170-180lbs
if you want a picture just google NP205 and click the images tab, you're sure to find several pages of NP205's pics
170-180 is more like the weight of the 203. The 205 weighs closer to 130. Either way, they're both heavy biyatches.
Rob, I believe Fishy is running a aluminum adapter too. To the best of my knowlege they never came bolted to an aluminum adapter. Maybe someone with some serious horsepower would have issues with it but with a little mall crawler like you drive I don't think it'll be a problem. It's not like you ever hit 8K anyway. Seriously though, if it hasn't broken yet I don't think it will.
Do not under estimate the strength of aluminum if it is a good alloy. If it is 6061 andpart is made while it is in a "O" state and then it is heat treated, it will be pretty strong (6061 is weldable too) if it is 7075, it is pretty seriously strong.

i actually have to agree here, i think this is the first time i have read from snoman that is somewhat true! i watched some discovery channel show where they were testing all the different strengths of metals and what not and some types of aluminum were much stronger than there steel counterparts. i have also seen some quite a few trailer hitches that are aluminum that have a high weight rating, although i've never compared them with the steel ones
however we are talking about old aluminum... prolly dating back to the late 70's so i highly doubt the strengths are anywhere near the same. if the t-case is mounted solidly the adapter would not be a problem.
i wieghed my case before bolting it in and it was right at 170lbs
