Ok here is a question, Ivan and I were just discussing this. Since as far as either of us can remember the NP203s all used short adaptors, and the np205 will bolt to that adaptor. and since I know all of the short adaptors I have are alum (only one I have that I haven't bothered to check is the one long one that is still bolted to the transmission, and tcase) I am wondering if instead of having 2 versions of the short adaptor if Ford didn't use the same adaptor for both cases, and make an Iron adaptor for the longer one. So the question is can anyone verify that you have a short adaptor that is made of iron instead of alum? easy to check if you have the short one in your truck go put a magnet on it and see if it sticks. I am just curious about this since all of mine are made of alum atleast in the short version
Rob, just tell people you used aluminum to cut down on weight so the truck was faster. I'm gonna go out in the garage here in a few minutes and see if I can dig out my short adapter. I'll let you know what I find out.
ok, i got a NP 205 the other day...while i was under my truck it hit me that the 203 sits furthur back because of the range box, i know im gonna have to do something about driveshafts, im wondering if im going to be able to relocate the Tcase support bracket, or will i have to get the bracket off the donor truck....hopefully they didnt cut it up like they did the front driveshaft...
When i first bought my 79 250 it had a c-6 and 203 in it. I fried the c-6 nand I had another c-6 with a 205 out of a bronco i had. It all bolted right up without any adapter plates needed. I did have to move the the t-case mount up, get a shorter front shaft and a longer back shaft. You may be able to get away with your original shafts though, thats just how I did it. I also swapped out the crappy full time hubs for a set of manual mile markers.
ill probably leave the full time hubs since i have no use for total 2wd....i figure that if i leave the full time hubs in that will be two less parts to break...

I think the adapter on my 203 was the short version, and it was iron because it began to rust after sitting outside for a while. It was missing the notch to clear the shifter rail for a 205. http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f2...7-05-05005.jpg
of course they came with 4 speeds! It took 3 guys and an engine hoist to get it in plus about 2-3 hours. it was a real bitch but I pulled the hoist inside the cab and dropped the arm and a strap through the tranny pan. I just lifted the trans and transfer case in and it took alot of heaving and wiggling to get it in.
