The important thing to remember about the headlight switch is there is a button on top of the switch. You need to depress and hold this button then pull the switch and rod straight out of the assembly. Everything is easy after that.
Be prepared to buy a new instument panel. The white backing plate can get really fragile. That was the reason my lights went out. I found a whole cluster, all guages, in good shape at a junkyard for $25.

A great idea.--Although the cluster in my truck is in good shape I will get one
from the junk yard as a backup. I'm sure they are getting scarce.

Actually many years of back panels interchange even among the vans based on connector size etc. Most of the time it is better to leave the parts in the junkyard until someone needs it. Otherwise it sits around in your shop and collects dust until it gets broken or you forget where it is when you need it.
