1994 f150 Vibration Problem

Just inherited this 1994 f150, 2wd, inline 6, automatic transmission with overdrive. It has a vibration when accelerating! It doesn't do it at all when coasting or idling only when you give it the gas and it does it at all speeds. It isn't extremly bad as i drove the truck 250 miles home today but it is quite annoying. I wish i could explain it better but it just seems that something in the drivetrain is causing the whole truck to vibrate when you accelerate. The motor seems to run smooth at idle and when you rev it up in park so i don't think it is an engine miss or anything like that. The whole truck seems to run and drive good except for this annoying vibration! Any advice as to where to begin to look for the problem would be greatly appreciated....Thanks in advance.

Does it do it in 1st or 2nd gear? Or only in 3rd and overdrive? These trucks were known for torque converter shudder esp with the E4OD tranny which is what you have.

Exclamation what type of Cab?

Is the truck a Ex-Cab or Single Cab? I'm asking because the Ex-Cab trucks have two piece driveshaft with a center bearing in the middle.
If the Center Bearing is warn it can cause vibration.
If the vibration is around 55mph and goes away as speed increases more than likely its the u joints.

Replacing U-Joints
You have to press the U-joints out of the drive shaft. I suggest a shop for this job if you don't have the tools.

If the truck has a one piece driveshaft replace both u joints
If the Truck has a two piece driveshaft. Check for slack along both driveshafts. You might be able to get away with just replacing the center bearing. But If there is slack in one of the driveshafts It would be a good idea to replace all 3 u joints.

handey does have a good point on the Transmission although its not much of a vibration that is more like a jerk while the transmission shifts I experience that sometimes in my truck(92 Ex-Cab 4.9 E40D AutomaticTransmission )when I take off hard.

Check the driveshaft u-joints for slop or movement. If there is none then have the trans checked.
U-joints can be replaced with a big hammer and a vice or they can be pressed out. I have replaced a few with the hammer method and never had a problem. A service manual will explain exactly what to do.

I have a 95 extended cab and it has a one piece driveshaft. I don't believe you have a center bearing.

Not necessarily. If you are approaching a turn at 55 MPH, and make the curve at bout 45 and get back into the gas once you go around the curve, it will almost feel like its "shuddering" like a vibration. Thats the torque converter not completely locking up for whatever reason. It sounds like your problem could be when the transmission goes into a "fault safe" mode and increases line pressure to shift harder to prevent slippage. I'm not so sure that the torque converter has much to do with the hard shifting...

My 94 X-cab has similar problem starts out worse on acceleration and smooths out at about 45 mph and worsens during deceleration. Idles smoooth and revs up smoothly. I looked at driveshaft, u-joints and carrier bearing. Could not detect any excess play but all looked dry. Also have shrill noise under hood seems to be from belt tensioner pulley. Took it to my mechanic. At one time I would have tackled the job of r & r but lying on the concrete for extended periods of time doesn't appeal to me anymore.

Wrong Trans Fluid

I doubt fluid would cause convertor to lock up, but different fluids have different slip, friction qualities. Ford usually has less slip and Gm more, so much so that Ford sells a tran. fluid additive to soften harsh shifting. You may benifit from a complete fluid change. Good luck.
