Plasma Cutter Tips and Tricks

As you may have guessed it, Dad and I got the shop a Christmas present(you have to get your shop something, its been a good shop all year), we got a Plasma Cutter. I was wondering if you guys had any tips, tricks, advice, etc, for the use and maintaining of this machine. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, I don't want to ruin it, because it was not cheap at all.

Run an air dryer and filter (in addition to the one on the machine), don't try to cut too thick of stuff, and be careful when punching holes through metal- the spray of molten metal can foul the tip or light you on fire, both are bad things.
And when cutting off a piece of steel, make sure it won't drop on the cord.

Try Nitrigon

Compressed AIR with a QUALITY dryer is always good, (maybe 2 dryers!) But I tried a LARGE Nitrigon tank the other day and it WORKED nice! Seem'd to burn hotter and cleaner! If your using for 20min-1hr a week, or delicate precise cuts, I would think Nitrigon would be my first choice.

If your using for several hours a day, compressed air!

I just simply rented a tank, abviously more expensive then compressed air!!

Watch the hold-off when cutting. Its amazingly easy to superheat the cutting tip and crater it. Plasma cutters are very expensive to run with all of the consumables. So, one must be cautious about too close to heavy metal. It forces you to linger longer in the same area and concentrate the heat back into the cutting head. Have fun though. I believe in treating the shop well for all of its good behavior.
