Plasma Cutters

Dad and i are going to buy a plasma cutter. We have narrowed it down to Miller or Thermal Dynamics. Either the Miller 625 or the Therminal Dynamics 50 or 81. Any info? Expirence?

I havent heard of the thermal one, but I'm sure someyone else has, Miller is a very good company, I would stick with name brand hence their usually the best, sometimes.
Maybe someyone can shed some light on the thermal.

Miller makes great welders but not plasma cutters. My miller guy told me this himself. He steered me towards a hypertherm and it works great. I've had it for a year.

I agree with cornfeed. My miller guy told me the same thing. I've been looking at the Hypertherm 600. Plan on getting one in the next few months.

I have a Hypertherm too. They are GREAT - you'll never know what you did without one! I bought my Miller MIG and then a Miller TIG, but when I went back to the same place looking into plasma cutters, and they recommended the Hyperthem. So I give cornfeed and fordman102 the nod. But I've had it for a while now with no problems or complaints.

You want a hypertherm. They are name brand and they have a very good reputation. Thank rank about #1, by anyone who uses them day in day out. Get on www.plasmacam.com and see how much they are recommended.

i've been using a thermal dynamic's 50 lately , cutting 5/16 ss plate w/o any troubles, it seems to be a trouble free machine, and cut's rather well. the one i've been using belongs to a customer of ours, so i don't know about the prices on the consumables though.

our miller rep, suggested the cutmaster 50 to us over the miller machines. but i'd go to the 80 if you can afford it..... bigger is better

No Big isnt always good...
Most large plasma cutters cant cut thinner material, and what if you gotta cut some 16 or 18 ga metal?

true, but in the difference between the 50, and the 80 won't stop you from cutting 16 or 18 ga, there are also methods to that can help you cut thinner material. it's all a matter of user knowlage

Would anyone care to comment on the Hypertherm Powermax 380 Plasma Cutter? I had been looking at the Lincoln 25 but got ecucated enough (around here) that I can do better.

Home shop, assorted metal work, nothing too heavy except a few rifle targets as needed.
