ignition lock problem ??

i bought a 90 f-250 last week and im having a problem with the ignition lock i think. when i start it sometimes the dash lights, radio, and heater dont come on until i hit the top of the steering column a couple times with my hand then everything comes on and works fine. it will still start but everything else inside wont work until i hit it. seems like a loose electrical connection.

is this the ignition lock itself or just a loose electrical connection to it ??

and is the ignition lock pretty easy to change and will a need any special tools like a puller or something to remove it ??

thanks, never changed one before

the lock is easy but the ignition switch itself is furthur down the column and is attached to the lock by an actuator rod.

do a search on this and you will find a lot of info,

I had a very similar problem on my 95 F150. I replaced the ign. switch and thought I had it beat. A couple days later it returned. Check your battery connections and the connections at the starter selinoid on the firewall. I'm still waiting for it to happen again, but it's holding out for about two weeks now.

I have similar issues with my 1994 F-350. The internal moving parts in the steering column were sticking. Mine is corrected with a slight turn of the switch back towards off when it sticks. If yours is sticking all the time you might need to use some lubricant inside the column.

Thge lock turned fine, it occasionally would stick and no radio, heater, ect. I just turn the key back towards off just a little and all returned to normal.
You might need to spray some graphite in the ignition switch inside the column.
