A gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is the estimated total weight of a roadvehicle that is loaded to capacity, including the weight of the vehicle itself plus fuel, passengers, cargo, and other miscellaneous items such as extra aftermarket parts.
My 2001 Excursion Limited V-10 has a GVWR of 8900lbs. When loaded as described above, mine weighs a few hundred pounds more. Even towing my glass boat I will usually average 13mph at 70mph on I-5. Don't even realize it's there. Otherwise I average 13 city and up to 16 on the Hwy. Last summer I had to replace the left front hub assembly. The cost of the part was $435.00. Two weeks later my tranny broke. That cost me $3700.00 to make it bullet proof and put on a heavier duty torque converter. I have one door lock actuator that is going out at this time. I believe from reading other posts that the blown spark plug problem happens not only in the V-10 but also in the 4.6L and the 5.4L. As was mentioned in another post, if they offer an extended warranty, buy it. The Excursion is not a lemon, and I'd never part with mine other than to buy a newer one.
You never mentioned what year the one your looking at is.
rdray, i think the gvw is a little higher if i'm not mistaken. i have the exact same truck. is yours 4x4? mine is. the truck weighs in at 8000 lbs with no people and no cargo. i find it hard to believe that you can find 8 people, and all the cargo and be less than 900 lbs.

ford390gashog - not sure which Ex's weigh 7,400 lbs., but the last time my Ex graced a scale (4x4 7.3 Limited) it weighed in at 8,500 lbs. Tank was ~3/4 full, third row seat was out and the truck was unloaded.
I'd buy it if its what u need. In my dept. we have an expedition, but its a supervisor's vehicle. And do you really think you are going to get in any pursuits with an Excursion? I know I wouldn't
We have several Expeditions in our dept. Both sgt.s and line duty have them. Each deputy assigned one has to pass both the high speed and low speed EVOC school annually.
We just turned in a 98 expedition with about 110k on it. It was shot, but mostly because of age. The '05 we have is world's different, but we still don't get to drive it. We have all '05 Crown Vics, and that's not going to change for us, and that high speed, low speed testing doesn't happen with us, not that it shouldn't, it just doesn't
