Okay, here goes. First let me say I know I'm dealing with 10 years difference & 2 different motors. Not really a problem, just more of curiosity. Old Rusty is a '91 F-150 w/302, The Beast is an '01 ex-cop car w/4.6 liter(? not sure about these sillyliter sizes, too old for this stuff ). Anyway, back to subject, Old Rusty always started with a fast idle like on a carb. He'd kick off if I goosed him. Thought this wasn't supposed to happen w/fuel injection/computer. Started The Beast to go in to the job today & it was idling a little fast. Tried goosing it, no difference. Had to wait for a minute or 2 till it warmed up a little & then dropped on its own. Old Rusty is still in the shop at tech school, so I don't have access to him right now. Is this right or does Old Rusty need something checked?
Yeah that's not right it should fast idle and then drop on it's own. Pull the codes before you go throwing parts at it, if that comes back all clear look for something more basic like an intake gasket leak or broken vacuum line. Could also be a stuck TB linkage or throttle cable.

Yes--I had this happen. The throttle shaft (or whatever it's proper name is) in the throttle body was binding, due to rust. Some penetrant, followed by "working it" with some light oil, did the trick.
Just wanted to say thanks for the info. guys. Thought it wasn't supposed to do that. F.Y.I. numbers ( from memory ) are fast idle around 1,000 or a little over, after kicking it off, around 500. This is what the factory tach shows if I remember right. Like the fact that tech school = no labor charge. Hate the fact that it's been there over a month now.
