Has around 50k on it or so, seems to have everything but a sunroof and leather in it.
Is it safe to buy an excop vehicle or can I expect to have lots of repairs because they were driven hard? Is there any way to tell? Anyone ever heard of doing this?
It has a 5.4L v8 in it... because of the size/ weight of the excursion am I going to get beat on gas mileage? Or should it be the same as an F150?
Im trying to decide between an xcab 04 or this 2000 Excursion.
It seats eight people and I am a youth pastor and the Excursion is about half the price of the 04, so I am giving is some thought...
yes you can expect some reapirs if it was used as a squad vehicle. but it may be in great shape if it was only captain or sheriff driven. the 5.4 will net you 12 mpg .
If it was used in a mid to large size agency, chances are it was well maintained. With the amount of miles on it, I'd say that it wasn't used as a 24 hour a day shift rotation vehicle. It was probably assigned to one person and this helps because he/she would know when something was going wrong and would have it repaired immediately. The agency would take full advantage of warranty work, and probably had a motor pool that did fluid changes regulary. It might be a good deal.

It was the Ontario Provencial Police, so it was definately part of a huge agency.
Im actually not sure on that motor, I am going to try to call again today, was the 5.4 an option in the excursion?
How much heavier is the Excursion than the F150? Huge difference?
Couple of issues to watch out for.
PLUGS: The V10 is known to blow plugs, that is the threads strip out on the plug and it blows right out of the head. Rare.. but not all that rare.
HUBS: They freeze up and do not auto lock.
DOOR LOCKS: some electrical issues with some Excursions.
I have a 2000 limited with 69,000. In the last 6 months I have blown 2 plugs(Repair $4500), the rear had to be rebuilt (Repair $1400) and the front hubs had to be replaced. (Repair $1200). THANK GOD FOR EXTENDED WARRANTEES.
ALL THAT SAID.... I love the truck. Pull a 33' travel trailer and it pulls like a dream. Stay away from the gas V8's in the Excursion. Too much weight for such a small motor.
If you are getting it from a dealer, go ahead and spring for the warrantee, mine has paid for itself many times over.
GOOD LUCK... PS.. I get about 12MPG with mine around town, not bad for a 7000# 4x4.
The plugs... No I can not think on one. Mine was because the prev. owner changed the plugs and I guess got a couple too tight. (this is not the old cast iron heads of the 460.....)
THe hubs can be checked, but I am not sure how.... well there has to be a better way than the way I did it... GET STUCK!
I'm sure there is a lot of brain power out here, I am sure you will get a better answer than mine.
the best way to check the plugs is to either replace them with new ones and make sure that you use a torque wrench an torque them to specs. or just loosen and retyorqur the old plugs.
make sure on spark plugs, on any vehicle that has aluminum heads, to use anti seize. i have heard that the plugs have a tendency to stick. this will cause stripped threads if they are ever removed.
