Hi!
My name is Paul and I have a 1966 F100. It has a tired 352 engine and a
4 speed (1st gear is granny) transmission. According to the owners manual,
it is either a Warner or New Process trans. What engine besides a 352 would be a good match for this transmission, and an easy swap?
Thanks for your input!

Hi Paul, Any reason not rebuild the 352? It's one of the best V8 truck engines for pulling ever built. Replacing it with the larger FE 390 would be a good option. IMHO
If you have the original door tag, the trans code will be an "N" for the New Process tranny... The 352 is a member of the FE family. Fortunately for you, any other FE motor will drop back in. The 352 received a .05 larger bore in 1968 and was bumped up to 360 status. The difference between a 360 and 390 is the crank and rods. Drop on in further down the forum list with the crew at the FE forum, plenty of money being spent in there
390 would be the best motor to drop in there. They a good strong motors and will run forever if poperly maintained. I have a 390 in my truck that has been in there for the past 20+ yrs. And it just keeps going and going. Best motor I have ever had.
I bought my '65 F250/352 in 1977 with 57K on the odom. I rebuilt it in 1988 when it had 200,500 miles on it with a 390 cam and high volumn oil pump - everything else is stock. It will pull my heavy trailer ( 1966 33' Streamline ) over the Cascades in fourth with an occasional downshift to third. The 352 now has over 300K on the odom and still going strong. Long live the FE's. Steve
Dear Steve, dendyr, Mike and John -
Thanks for your input! It sounds like you guys like the 352 and the 390 best.
Does anyone know the Horsepower rating on a stock 390 engine? I believe the
352 is rated at 208 HP. Thanks gentlemen!
- Paul
Paul, It will depend on the carb and other things. My dads 65 Galaxy had a 352 in it with 250 hp and his 66 pickup 352 was 208. The 390 is 40 more cubic inches would be bored .30 over if it is original, and I think that goes to about 396 or so. Putting different intakes, headers, carbs will increase the horse power.
I suggested 352 because you already own it, but like the 390 much better.
I am not sure what the hp rating is on mine any more. I have added headers and a new card and distributor and daul exhast that exits infornt of the rear wheels. I just know that I can smoke the tire in second and third gear. So I am happy with it. Its probably close to 250hp but thats just a guess.
Great to hear all these good things about the 352 , bought a 66 with one in it, 86000 miles on it . during restoration i'm going to take apart / clean and check clearences and wear. Showing low compression but pretty sure its in the heads. It sat for 30 years..May get by with bearings ,rings and seals but I want it done right while its out. Same with auto tranny..I'll probably be asking for advice every now and then..thanks in advance.. going to try that oil thing in the cyl,s before I take heads off.

Was it out in the open for 30 years?
Have you tried to run it at all?
It was stored in a barn, A man bought it new , drove it 10 years and then parked it. Still had 1976 plates on it and 76 tax forms in glove box. and original Tenn title [ strange looking, bill of sale printed out on an official paper ] the engine revs fast and strong, will burn the tires off [both tires , dana rear] and sounds great, no ticking or anything..has a miss in it when you hold the gas even. I'm sure it needs valve stem seals and anything else time puts a hurting on but I dont think the engine is hurt. First 2 cyl. I checked showed around 68 on compression , im going to do them all and then add a little oil and recheck . Engine ,s coming apart anyway for all seals and checking . Tranny is a cruisamatic with coolant ran back to it[ that was new to me]. shifts great. Very solid truck ,came from western Tenn . Freindship was the town. mise destroyed the seat but left everything else alone. great old truck....
Hi John -
Thanks for your advice! I would probably go with an unmodified 2BBL version of the
390, maybe adding headers and dual exhaust. Sorry that I was not more specific,
but your answer was perfect, (I was looking for the mild version of the 390). I think
my trans is probably the Warner T-98A, since the letter on the plate is an A. I am
assuming it is the original trans, but I am not sure... Do you know what an A code
means for the transmission code?
Thanks a lot!
