Any other proud Xterra owners on here? You know I never thought I would own a Nissan, but when we set out to get a new sport ute, Nissan was the only one that fit the bill, for us. American made. Gobs of horsepower. Roomy, yet compact.
I know the critisism is coming, so let me have it!
I've blasted Nissan here plenty. To say I'm not a fan would be a gross understatement. There is one- and only one- (US sold) Nissan I'd ever consider owning- the Xterra. And that's only because Toyota sissified the 4-Runner.

The new Xterra is a great little truck. That 4.0 upgrade of the basic Z car engine is quite powerful, it is mated to a great tranny and drive train, and it is probably the most off-roadable truck in its class. It is sort of in a niche of its own right now.
I am a very happy Nissan Armada owner. No problems at all and incredible power and smoothness. It replaced my Ford Expedition. Sadly, the current Expeys just were not up to the task.
But I'm still a Ford guy and will not let go of my 7.3 F-250, even at 450,000 plus miles when I need some real grunt.
Enjoy the Xterra. If you go off-road much, it'll bring a real smile to your face.

What? Criticism? Nah. We are an understaaaaanding bunch here. You're helping put dinner on a neighbor's table tonight. Not a bad thing. Ford and Nissan partnered up on the Villager and Quest, so we LOVE Nissan.
I find it shocking that Ford's don't fit everyone's needs/desires myself. Okay, you saw that sarcasm coming...
My only nitpick would be that the 3.5L that was in the X drank gas. Could the 4.0L be any worse?
I don't give a damn about mileage, I wanted a capable vehicle! We were stuck on an Escape for the longest time. That is until I realized that new Escapes were too expensive, and used Escapes were too expensive. And the underlying fact that Xterra's still have solid rears! We bought our '05 X for $19k and some change, with 230 miles. I would've never considered an Xterra except that the '05 is a lot bigger than it's predecessor.
We have a good compromise; she has a nimble grocery getter, and I have a very capable (already tested) off-roader for camping, trail rides, etc. The escape was roomy, but lacked power and refinement, and it just wasn't a truck. Explorers are out the door too. I fit in an escape better than an explorer for cryin' out loud!
Basically I'm a life long Forder, but they let me down this time by not filling the gap to compete with the Xterra. Maybe they'll bring the Bronco back. I've still got my '97 PSD for pulling mountains.

I knew that was coming. There is nothing- absolutely nothing- you could say, write, or document that could sway me into an Armada. Not with 'Burbs and Tahoes on the other side of the lot.
I will say Nissan makes the last, true Sport 'Ute in the Xterra. I'd like to see Ford pick up the flag for something similiar (I know Chevy won't).
I have an 05 Xterra 4x4 and love it. . . I have had numerous vehicles in the past 4 years, and this is by far the best. . .but it is like anything else, it is personal preference. . . while I may love it, others may hate it and so is life.
And another thing with the Xterra is there is an aftermarket for it has been for the last 5 yrs so you can upgrade most things on the X. Calmini is one of the biggest for aftermaket parts for the X. I have 3 Fords and 1 olds but wouldn't mind having an X for an suv.
i bought one of the first nissan xterra's back in july of 99 (2000 model) i put a 3 inch lift kit on it, along with an arb bumper, 33 inch tires, plus a ton of more mods. i put 90,000 miles on it, with quite a few of them offroad. the truck never let me down and never spent one day in the service dept!!
Kind of off track - but on Saturday I took a Nissan Navara (related to a Frontier) for a pedal.
With 171hp and 300lbft of torque out of its 2.5l CR Diesel and with a 6 speed manual the darn thing was impressive.
Pity about its sub standard below 1 ton hauling rating...
I had a 2001 XTerra and I loved the thing. It has a unique look, which I like, of course I liked the look of my two Avalanches too. The Av's were nothing but probs though. Two brand new ones. One lasted 3 months and the second one lasted 2 months.
I kept the Xterra from Nov '00 'til Jul '03. Only prob I had was one elec window motor went out. Replaced under warranty. Had to trade when my son's car seat was turned around facing forward. Just not enough backseat room.
Dislikes: My '01 had the 3.3L, only option then. The X was way too heavy for that engine IMO. I used to drive Nissans a lot. I live 30 miles north of Smyrna, TN where they're built and my Sunday school teacher works there. He'd give me one of his VPP things and I could buy a Nissan for dealer invoice less 2.7%. My only other complaint is Nissan changes body styles WAY too often. This dates your vehicle and hurts resale and trade-in value.
Well let's see.......my girlfriend owns an 03 Xterra and is is without a doubt the hardest vehicle I have ever had the honor of giving a hand wash too.
Other than that, the interior fit and finish is sub-par IMO. I had a 87 Nissan truck that looked better on the inside, as far as materials and fit of plastic panels. It runs good but gets lousy mileage. My v8 Ford truck gets better.
She just recently spent over a 1000 dollars to replace the fuel tank, charcoal canister, some 85 dollar valve that caused the charcoal in the canister to plug lines made into the fuel tank....no way to clean them.....and a 10 dollar O-ring for the fuel tank sending unit/fuel pump opening. The thing would not take a full opening of a pump nozzle and the plugged lines were the problem.
Main thing is she likes it....I don't. I ask her to drive it if we go anywhere in it and if we go in my 97 F-150....she wants to drive. Go figure.
