P0302 Misfire...!?

Misfire in cylinder #2

1998 Ford F150 4.6L 4X2

I tested the resistance of the coil packs, switched the coil packs, switched the plugs, replaced the wires and plugs, and I am still pulling the same code each time!!!!

I've seen numerous posts on COP failure, but am really confused on whether I have COP's or not. I have orange 'plugs' above each spark plug wire...are they COP's or fuel injectors? SEE PHOTOS!

What else can I check to fix this problem?

Those are injectors. You have 2 coil packs and wires. Check to see if there is spark at the #2 cyl. You don't have a cop system, that means a coil for each cyl. Coil on plug.

a p0302 code is a missfire code as you know. the bad news is that it doesnt always mean that you have an ignition problem. a leaking or bad injector, a severe vac leak on that cylinder, pcm driver issues, are fust a few of the cheaper problems. the bigger picture....burned piston or valve, broken valve spring or kicked valve follower are some other examples of more severe problems. i would recommend running a dry then we compression test and start from there....you may have a mechanical cause for the missfire.

If it means anything, I had DTC P0303 about 1 month ago. We replaced the appropriate coil pack and spark plug/wire, but the vehicle continued to give the same code. We took the truck to FORD out of frustration. FORD said we had carbon build up in the cylinder that was causing the problem. Anyways, the cleaned that out and the truck ran fine until now. Now we're getting a DTC in cylinder #2. After making changes such as replacing coil packs and spark plugs/wires to fix DTC's, are you supposed to reset the check engine light or will the light automatically go out if you fix the issue correctly? We just reset the check engine light using my laptop and now were not getting any DTC's. Will it come back later?

you can disconnect the battery for about 10 minutes to clear. it will return if the problem is still there. the misfire monitor sets pretty fast

I have a similar situation w/ my 97 4.6l. I am getting a p0301 code.First replaced plugs truck ran fine for a while. Started missing again checked gap on plug of cy#1 was way off. I regapped plug and the truck ran fine for about 2 weeks. Started acting up again replaced the wires and coil. I have noticed oil on the spark plug boot just on that cylinder think it is coming from a valve cover leaking down into the plug hole. I don't know if that is the problem or if it is the fuel injector. I am at my wits end it runs ok for a while after i work on it then goes downhill slowly. (any suggestions)

There are about 10 different things that can cause a misfire code. You have started with the obvious, coils and wires. You should start it up at nite and rev it up to check for arcing from the wires. The next thing I would try is cleaning the throttle body. Sometimes the EGR and/or the IAC becomes clogged with carbon. Here's a good link for OBD codes.

http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_cod...e-detected.php

A code P0300 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

* Faulty spark plugs or wires
* Faulty coil (pack)
* Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
* Faulty fuel injector(s)
* Burned exhaust valve
* Faulty catalytic converter(s)
* Stuck/blocked EGR valve / passages
* Faulty camshaft position sensor
* Defective computer
