changing COP's

changing COP's
Ok 97 ford E250 893,650 miles....swear. 5.4 V8 Triton . It's my work van probably 350 miles a day. It started with 15 codes. EGR and random misfires. I replaced the EGR and spark plugs. Got new codes primary and secondary ignition coils. Checked the work and found 2 coils not bolted down(my guy sucks) so I bolted them down and the check engine light came on again. I don't own a scanner so I have no clue what codes it's throwing now. My question is I have a 99 expedition same motor I confirmed that the cop's are the same and they are in great shape so I'm going to use them and install them in the van DO I replace only the coil boot or the whole piece OR should and can I use the COP from the expedition. 2nd question if I only use the boot how do I get it off one to the other doesn't appear to just switch. Am I'm missing something?

I used COPs from a crown vic on my V10. Same part. My suggestion is to swap the whole thing. Boot and coil. If you take it to an autozone or similar they should be able to hook up a scanner and possibly let you know which one is bad. I guess and got it right.
I have spare COPs. If you need some send me a PM.

First advice is if you're going to keep this van and it being a daily driver get yourself a decent code scanner. Without one you're guessing what to repair which is a bit costly and probably even more "ill advised" than ever imagined. Look for one that will read and cancel found codes---I personally use an "older" Actron CP9580 which has been flawless for me. There should be a ton of those on FleaBay----don't pay over $150 even for one in almost new used condition.
Those devices tend to pay for themselves if only for the piece of mind they give.
COP's for Ford tend to be pretty much the same across the board however be advised between model years 2000 and 2003 the terminals changed making them incompatible----this is a minor point if you're looking to swap spare parts in place of your existing COP's but one that needs to be known.
Jim is also correct about swapping the boot and COP as a complete unit. In fact I'll use a new boot anytime one even looks halfway sketchy----hate doing the same job over by trying to cheap out the first time. I use an NAPA #702418, about $5 each. BTW most new COP's come with boots of some description but I still swap out the NAPA version---they're softer and more compliant which means a better, tighter seal around the plug porcelain.
Anyway that's what I know-----and do too!

Bravo if DIY is going to be something you're doing invest in your own inexpensive code scanner---get one that will cancel codes too---it'll be a life saver.

2nd question
2nd question. This is my work van and haven't worked for about 10 days cause it's running like crap. Will get scanner as soon as I get back to work. Question when I take the cop's from the expedition do I have to keep them in order 1 to 1, 2 to 2 and so on. I would assume I do just confirming
