9" rear disk brake kit

I have found a company offering a kit to upgrade the rear brakes to disks.
I had planed on just getting a different backing plate and going to 2 1/2" drum brakes. I have called all over and find they dont make them for the early 9" big bearing. Here is a link to the company

Has any of you done this? What are your thoughts ,
Thank you, bruland

bruland, Welcome to FTE The best truck show on earth.

From what I have read, You have to buy parts from different places. The pre 68 9" rears had a smaller brake size and axle offset than post.

Maybe oneday soon, someone will have everything needed.

John

John is correct. Putting rear discs on your truck will involve major revisions, especially as it applies to the rear half-shafts or axles. Upgrading to the '68 - 79 later wider drum brakes on trucks earlier than '68 means using the '68 - 72 half shafts, and they are hard to find. You can't just use the wider backing plate. (I know, I did this project on my '66, and it turned out well, but only after a lot of frustration. I can give you the parts list, if you want. It is much easier than the rear disc brakes, cheaper, and an excellent upgrade well worth the money.)
Disc brakes will not be a bolt on project, and they will give you less than desireable results. Notice that very few if any factory trucks have rear disc brakes - there is a reason for it. They are not practical for a truck, and if not set up precisely correct, can be dangerous. My observations from those who have done it for street trucks have been that they will give you more grief than help.
My advice would be to put your dollars and efforts into something which would give you more returns for the money.

Just my opinions.

Whoops! I forgot to tell you WELCOME to FTE!!
I don't know what your truck's current configuration is, but you might want to consider upgrading to power steering, front disc brakes, electronic ignition, perhaps even a complete body swap onto a '73-'79 frame.
There is a tremendous amount of wonderful information here on FTE, so jump on in, the water's fine!

Thanks for the input

This has gotten to be a lot hard than I thougt.

I have a 64 F100, 223, short box, with a Dana 60
4:56. Why anybody would order the truck with the
Dana B5 code. The truck came out of Washington State
and the cab and box are so straigth that that could of never
of been used to haul very much. The frame still has a factory
paper tag on the inside right frame rail that warns not to drill
holes in the frame.

It's time to move to the front of the truck.

Thanks for the help,B

Wow, sounds like you have a really nice truck! It would be a shame to alter it too much, since it is so original.
I was assuming also that you had a 9" rear, and that you had a front twin I-beam suspension.
Since you have a '64, pay attention to the advice here at FTE, make usre that you are reading advice for a '64 and earlier, not for a '65 and later.

Good luck to you!

In your case, look for a 9" Ford axle from a '68 - '72. It will bolt up exactly to your truck, with no modifications required. The shock towers and spring perches will be in the correct locations, and the axle width will be correct.
Additionally, you will have the wider rear brakes, and you will have a much wider choice of rear end ratios.
The only concern I would have is whether or not the spring perches are the same, especially as it applies to width, between a Dana and a Ford rear axle, specifically in your application. I am told they are the same, but it never hurts to measure twice and cut (or remove and re-install!) once.
